Room 3 welcomes 9 Year 4 students from Room 4, to share in our Religious Education learning each day. At the moment we are looking at how Caritas (Catholic Aid Agency) is helping Cambodia during the season of Lent. We have learnt a lot about the country and culture of Cambodia including that New Zealand is about one and a half times bigger in terms of land area and that there are many amazing temples (wats) and shrines in Cambodia. As an activity we are making prayer flags. In many Buddhist countries such as Cambodia, prayer flags can be seen fluttering from the top of the temples. The brightly covered flags display messages of peace and joy and the prayers are blown by the wind to reach people far away.
Today we remembered those who died in the February 22 2011, Christchurch earthquake, especially Ivy Cabunilas, mother of Ryanna and Reshnee,
students here at the time of the earthquake. We rang the Peace Bell at
12.51 pm and observed a minutes silence. Teachers led the students in
prayer and reflection after lunch, followed by a silent walk to Ivy's memorial
plaque where the Year 7/8 students respectfully placed flowers in honour of Ivy
and her family. May all those who died in the earthquake be at Peace ... we remember their families and friends.
